French Politician calls to remove footballer Karim Benzema over link with Muslim Brotherhood

Following a recent television interview by French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin in which he asserted that Karim Benzema had alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, a French politician is now pushing for the revocation of the star footballer's citizenship and the stripping of his awards.

In the interview, Darmanin stated that Benzema is "notoriously linked with the Muslim Brotherhood, we all know it." Benzema's legal team vehemently denied this accusation, categorizing it as "false" in a statement to the French media.
However, Valérie Boyer, a French senator and vice-president of the conservative Les Républicains party, is undeterred and continues to call for the authorities to revoke Benzema's French citizenship. She proposes that the initial punishment should involve the removal of the Ballon d'Or award he received in 2022, considering it a "symbolic sanction," followed by the withdrawal of his French nationality.
It's worth noting that Benzema currently holds dual Algerian and French citizenship. He represents the French national team and plays at the club level in Saudi Arabia.
The Muslim Brotherhood is an international Islamic political and social organization with the aim of introducing Islamic values and principles into government and society. However, it has faced controversy due to alleged connections with groups deemed extremist by some. In Saudi Arabia, the Muslim Brotherhood is designated as a terrorist organization.
While Valérie Boyer's original statement has been removed from social media, it has been preserved by other users on X (formerly Twitter). An update from Boyer's official account reiterates her desire to strip Benzema of his football award and French nationality.
Karim Benzema, a 35-year-old player from Lyon, made a move to the Saudi club Al-Ittihad for a reported €200 million earlier this year. He had previously played for Real Madrid and Lyon. Throughout his professional career, Benzema has been embroiled in several scandals, including a 2010 indictment on allegations of having sex with an underage prostitute. In 2014, this case was dropped due to insufficient evidence proving Benzema's knowledge of the girl's age. In 2015, he was arrested on charges of blackmailing another French international player over a sex tape recorded on a mobile phone and was found guilty in 2021, receiving a suspended sentence and a fine.
