Survey Reveals a Surge in Sleep Deprivation Among the Population

A collaborative survey conducted by the Hungarian Sleep Association and the Danish retail chain, JYSK, has unveiled concerning findings: six out of ten individuals experience poor sleep, a quarter of the population wakes up feeling tired, and the impact of sleep deprivation on health is alarming.

György G. Németh, President of the Hungarian Sleep Association, emphasized the significant decline in the average amount of sleep per person, coupled with a notable increase in the number of sleep-deprived nights—rising by 13-15 nights, as indicated by international research. This trend carries grave consequences, as reported by Magyar Nemzet.

This year, nearly 40% of the population regards themselves as either excellent or fairly good sleepers. However, only 4% of Hungarians achieve normal sleep quality. A concerning 20% of the population perceives their sleep as rather poor or very poor, marking an increase compared to the previous year.

The survey also reveals that women encounter more severe sleep problems than men. Common symptoms include daytime sleepiness, middle-of-the-night awakenings, difficulty returning to sleep, and waking up fatigued.

In spite of these issues, a mere 7% of the population has sought consultation with a general practitioner regarding sleep problems, and a mere 2% have consulted a sleep specialist. Astonishingly, 4% of the population suffers from sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder characterized by recurrent interruptions in breathing. This condition, which results in oxygen deprivation and can occur up to 60 times per hour, not only shortens lives but also diminishes their quality. Disrupted sleep disrupts the brain's ability to regulate bodily functions, leaving individuals tired and unfocused throughout the day.

Annually, Hungary witnesses numerous road accidents caused by drivers falling asleep behind the wheel. While sleep problems were not previously regarded as a disease, contemporary medical science identifies "abnormal" sleep as a pathological condition on par with cardiovascular issues.

Hungary's largest sleep laboratory, situated at the Military Hospital – State Health Center (Honvédkórház) in Budapest, serves over 100 individuals daily for sleep-related concerns, with two to three thousand new patients registering each year. The facility conducts over 10,000 nocturnal and diurnal tests annually, averaging 30 tests per day. However, many people still refrain from seeking help, potentially leading to tragic outcomes.

Experts have emphasized that the choice of bedding, such as the type and warmth of the blanket, and the suitability of the pillow for adequate neck and head support are vital factors influencing the quality of sleep.
