Denmark dismisses leak charges against ex-minister and former intelligence chief

Denmark has officially abandoned charges against a former defense minister and a former intelligence chief, Claus Hjort Frederiksen and Lars Findsen, regarding alleged leaks of classified information. Danish prosecutors made this announcement on Wednesday, citing recent court decisions that required top-secret evidence to be made public.

Both Frederiksen and Findsen, who had been charged under a seldom-used section of the penal code carrying a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison, consistently maintained their innocence throughout the legal process.

The decision to drop the charges came after a series of rulings in the Danish Supreme Court, which determined that the trial of the former minister could not be held behind closed doors, consequently preventing the presentation of classified information as evidence in court.

The Prosecution Authority stated, "The classified information is pivotal to the cases. Without the ability to present them in court, the prosecution would be unable to meet the burden of proof."

The specific details of the charges were not disclosed, but Frederiksen suggested to local media that they were related to public statements he had made about a confidential surveillance agreement between Denmark and the U.S. National Security Agency.
