Healthtech startup Aware launches publicly in Berlin and Hamburg with Frankfurt opening soon

After a successful private beta program involving approximately 2,000 participants, Berlin-based Aware, a health tech startup dedicated to combatting chronic diseases through blood and health tests, officially launches to the general public in Berlin and Hamburg. The startup, co-founded by Florian Meissner and Ferdinand Schmidt-Thomé, former co-founder of EyeEm, secured $15 million in seed funding reported by Tech.eu in June 2022.

With plans to establish a testing facility in Frankfurt am Main in the near future, Aware aims to revolutionize health management by creating Europe's largest health database for personalized medicine, contributing to medical research. Employing a data-driven approach, the startup seeks to transform traditional medical checkups by digitizing and leveraging blood tests and biomarkers for deeper insights and novel treatment options.

The company's philosophy centers around empowering individuals to have a transparent view of their overall health, aligning with the widespread interest in health monitoring seen with the popularity of wearables. Aware plans to integrate its app into wearable devices, allowing users to continuously track blood pressure, heart rate, and blood levels within a single application.

Despite its modest presentation, Aware's "basic" blood test, focusing on long-term health, encompasses 44 values, more than double the biomarkers found in a full blood count. This comprehensive test provides information on blood, heart, immune system, kidneys, liver, metabolism, health status, as well as insights into hormone, mineral, and vitamin levels.

As part of its subscription offering, Aware provides bi-annual tests, including the basic blood test, and extends screening to the less commonly tested cholesterol marker, Apolipoprotein B.

Launch collaborations
"To achieve rapid progress, venture alone; for enduring success, venture together."

As part of its public debut, Aware has established three strategic partnerships:

A collaboration with TeleClinic will empower Aware users to promptly have their results evaluated by a physician through video consultation. This initiative aims to provide immediate feedback on test values when a consultation with the user's primary care physician is not immediately available.

In conjunction with the Limbach Group, Germany's largest owner-managed, full-spectrum laboratory group, Aware will leverage a nationwide network of laboratories for future testing services.

Teaming up with Eterno Health, Aware will integrate with a service offering fully equipped practice rooms and administrative functions for independent physicians across various disciplines. The collaboration will be fully operational in Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main, where Aware labs are situated on the premises of Eterno Health.

Reflecting on the launch, Oliver Heimes, partner at Lakestar and an investor in Aware, remarked:

"As a society, it is imperative to contemplate models that proactively enhance healthcare and leverage data more effectively to prevent the onset of many diseases. Aware's approach aligns with this vision, and we are confident that its concept will resonate with individuals, contributing to a healthier society overall."
