Macron Stands Firm: Western Troops in Ukraine Still a Possibility

French President Macron Reiterates Stance on Ukraine, Stresses Existential Threat

In a half-hour prime-time television interview on Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed his refusal to rule out the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine, framing the conflict as an existential threat.

Macron emphasized the potential consequences of a Russian victory, stating that it would fundamentally alter the lives of French citizens and compromise security in Europe.

Addressing previous statements made in February, which sparked controversy domestically and internationally, Macron defended his position against setting limitations on responding to Russia's actions, asserting that doing so would equate to accepting defeat. He advocated for strategic ambiguity, asserting that France would refrain from leading offensives or taking proactive measures.

Regarding his relationship with Putin, Macron emphasized the gravity of the situation in Ukraine, emphasizing the need to focus on the broader conflict rather than personal dynamics.

Recent French legislative actions, including a security agreement supporting Ukraine's NATO aspirations and promising financial and military assistance, have been met with public skepticism. A majority of respondents in an Odoxa poll criticized Macron's stance on Western troops in Ukraine.

The president's increasingly assertive rhetoric has strained relations with Germany, particularly Chancellor Olaf Scholz's more restrained approach to the conflict. Macron and Scholz, alongside Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, are scheduled to meet in Berlin in an attempt to demonstrate unity amidst escalating tensions.
