Belgium to police Telegram under new EU tech law

Belgium will now oversee the operations of the social media app Telegram as it aligns with the European Union's new regulations governing content policing on digital platforms.

Telegram, headquartered in Dubai, has appointed a company based in Brussels as its legal representative in the EU, according to a spokesperson from Belgium's telecoms authority, BIPT, as reported by local newspaper De Standaard.

Under the Digital Services Act (DSA), platforms operating in Europe must designate a local representative. Despite Telegram's popularity for its privacy features, it has also become a hub for conspiracy theorists, cybercriminals, and extremists propagating hate speech. With over 800 million monthly active users worldwide, it's subject to scrutiny under the DSA.

While major tech firms fall under European Commission supervision, smaller platforms like Telegram are overseen by national regulators, contingent on where they appoint their legal representation. Telegram has chosen the Brussels-based European Digital Services Representative (EDSR).

Belgium's telecom authority, BIPT, will serve as the Digital Services Coordinator, overseeing Telegram's compliance. According to BIPT spokesperson Jimmy Smedts, the authority will assume full competence once the country enacts its legislation implementing the regulatory framework.

At the time of reporting, Telegram had not responded to requests for comment.
