Prato Fast Food Operations Suspended: 800 Kilos of Unsafe Food Discovered

In an effort to prevent and combat illicit activities, ongoing inspections of agri-food supply chains are being conducted to safeguard public health. The Financial Police of Prato are leading an operation known as “Fast Food.” Over the summer, the Provincial Command of Prato intensified its inspections of businesses involved in the marketing of agri-food products. This included a comprehensive mapping of purchasing channels, particularly for imported items, and identifying businesses with higher risk profiles concerning geographical indications and product origins.

The Mobile Nucleus of the Prato Group conducted extensive analyses that resulted in the identification of three ethnic restaurants in the city, all marked by significant opacity in their food product supply chains.

During the inspections, the officers reviewed the commercial documentation for all raw materials, checking compliance with labeling, origin certification, and national and community regulations governing agri-food marketing and distribution. Upon discovering clear hygiene and health violations, the officers coordinated with the Prevention Department of the ASL of Prato, which dispatched inspectors to conduct specific checks. These inspections led to the suspension of activities at the three restaurants and the destruction of approximately 800 kilos of food that failed to meet minimum safety standards for preservation and labeling, prohibiting its release for public consumption. The responsible parties were penalized under Legislative Decree 193/2007 for violating Reg. 852/2004, and their activities were suspended in accordance with EC Reg. 2017/625.
