African Lion 2025 Planning Conference for Tunisia Concludes in Vicenza.

VICENZA, Italy – The planning for African Lion 2025 (AL25), a major multinational military exercise set to take place in Tunisia next spring, advanced during a mid-planning conference held from November 12-15, 2024. The exercise, scheduled for April 21 - May 2, 2025, will span various locations across Tunisia, including Tunis, Bizerte, and the Ben Ghilouf Training Area (BGTA), featuring a range of training events from academic courses to high-intensity military operations.

Tunisian Senior Col. Mguidich Mejid, the exercise director, emphasized the significance of the event: "This will be the most extensive exercise we've hosted, and we're excited to collaborate with our U.S. partners and allies." AL25 aims to strengthen joint, multinational readiness and build partnerships between the U.S. military, the Tunisian Armed Forces, and allied nations, with nearly 8,000 participants expected from countries including Morocco, Senegal, and Ghana.

The planning conference saw nearly 100 senior leaders from Tunisia, the U.S., and other countries, including U.S. Army Col. Drew Conover, director of exercises for U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), who praised the collaboration. He noted, "We’ve had the pleasure of welcoming the top Tunisian military leaders, who work directly with the government to ensure the success of this exercise."

The exercise will offer specialized training in multiple areas across Tunisia:

Tunis and Bouficha will host courses on public affairs, rule of law, and air exchanges.
Bizerte will focus on explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) training, and counter-improvised explosive device (C-IED) operations.
BGTA will feature advanced military exercises, including air-ground integration and high mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS) drills, conducted by the New Hampshire National Guard, along with multinational airborne operations led by the 173rd Airborne Brigade.
AL25's wide scope highlights the increasing importance of multinational collaboration in addressing regional security challenges, involving personnel from across the globe. The final phase of planning will take place in Tunisia in January 2025, focusing on refining operational details to ensure the exercise’s success.
