Padua Welcomes the Year of the Snake with Chinese New Year 2025 Celebrations
The city of Padua invites residents and visitors to explore and celebrate the Lunar New Year, commonly known as the Chinese New Year in the West. Also called the Spring Festival, it is the most significant holiday in Chinese culture. The year 2025 marks the Year of the Snake, a zodiac sign associated with wisdom, intuition, shrewdness, and the power of transformation.
To honor the occasion, the Confucius Institute at the University of Padua, with support from Guangzhou University and sponsorship from the University and Municipality of Padua, has organized a series of free-entry events.
Festivities begin on Sunday, February 2, at 3 PM, with the traditional Dragon Dance starting in front of Palazzo Moroni and making its way through the city center. The parade concludes at Piazza delle Erbe, where attendees can enjoy spectacular performances by students from the ASD Weisong martial arts school in Pordenone, led by Master Liu Yuwei, along with traditional Chinese music and dance performances.
Later that evening, the Auditorium of the San Gaetano Cultural Center will host the event "Welcome to the Year of the Snake: Between Tradition and Modernity." The program features martial arts demonstrations, modern dance, traditional Chinese songs, and an interactive lottery. Reservations are required for this performance.
Additionally, from February 6 to 27, the Padua Chinese Film Festival returns with four evenings of Chinese cinema screenings. Films will be shown at Cinema Lux (Viale Felice Cavallotti 9, Padua) at 9 PM, with free entry available on a first-come, first-served basis. The lineup includes:
- February 6: Fallen Angels by Wong Kar-wai
- February 13: Full River Red by Zhang Yimou
- February 19: Song of Silence by Chen Zhuo
- February 27: Farewell My Concubine by Chen Kaige
This vibrant program offers a unique opportunity to experience Chinese traditions, arts, and cinema while celebrating the arrival of the Year of the Snake.
