Italy’s Far-Right League Party Supports Trump’s Withdrawal from WHO

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini has introduced a bill to withdraw Italy from the World Health Organization (WHO), following the example set by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

“I presented this morning at the Chamber of Deputies the League's bill to leave the WHO, just as the United States did under Donald Trump,” Salvini, leader of the far-right League party, announced on social media Thursday evening.

“Italy must no longer be subject to a supranational power center—funded by Italian taxpayers—that aligns itself with multinational pharmaceutical companies. Instead, we should use those 100 million euros to support the sick in Italy and invest in our hospitals and doctors,” he added.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, one of Trump’s closest allies in Europe, has not yet commented on Salvini’s proposal. A spokesperson for Meloni told AFP that she has not taken a position on the matter.

The League’s move follows Trump’s executive order on Monday to withdraw the United States from the WHO.

In response, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced Thursday that the organization is implementing a hiring freeze and cutting travel expenses to manage a worsening financial situation.
