Lega Serie A Sets May 23rd for Inter Milan and Napoli’s Season Finale
Inter Milan and Napoli will play their final Serie A matches of the season on Friday, May 23rd, according to Italian outlet FCInterNews. The league has finalized the schedule, setting the date for the title contenders’ last games, with a potential playoff scheduled for May 26th.
The Lega Serie A convened today to decide when the season’s final matches would take place.
The scheduling of Inter Milan and Napoli’s matches posed a particular challenge, as the title race between the Nerazzurri and the Partenopei is expected to be decided on the final day.
Because of this, both teams must play their matches simultaneously.
Additionally, if Inter and Napoli finish level on points, a head-to-head playoff will be held to determine the champion.
Scheduling a potential playoff is complicated by Inter’s participation in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 31st in Munich. The club will want sufficient rest and preparation time for this crucial match.
Inter’s priority has been to complete their league fixtures as early as possible.
Initially, Inter hoped to play their last match against Como on Thursday, with Napoli hosting Cagliari at the same time. This arrangement would have allowed a playoff to take place on Sunday, May 25th, if needed.
However, Napoli preferred Friday for their final match, just before the weekend, which was also DAZN’s preferred date for broadcasting.
The league meeting to decide the kickoff date was contentious and briefly suspended, with Inter, Napoli, and DAZN all making their cases.
In the end, the league settled on Friday, May 23rd for Inter and Napoli’s final Serie A matches.
If a playoff is necessary, it will be scheduled for Monday, May 26th.
