Rome Struggles with Series of Wildfires as Intense Heatwave Grips the City

Rome – Firefighters in the Italian capital battled multiple wildfires on Monday, 30 June, as extreme heat gripped the city under a maximum red alert warning.

The most serious blazes broke out in several suburban areas, including the Valle dell'Aniene nature reserve in the northeast, Ponte Galeria near Fiumicino Airport, the Fregene junction on the Rome-Fiumicino motorway, and Tor Carbone near Via Appia Nuova.

The fires caused road closures and heavy traffic disruptions, prompting the deployment of emergency crews and aerial support, including helicopters dropping water to control the flames.

Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri issued a statement affirming that the city is actively enforcing strict fire prevention measures, warning that those who violate regulations will face severe penalties.

“We are committed to preventing and managing fires during the summer season,” Gualtieri said. “Rome cannot afford for these fires to become a recurring emergency.”

He urged both authorities and residents to act with responsibility and cooperation.

The fires come amid a prolonged heatwave affecting Rome, with maximum heat alerts (bollino rosso) in effect through Wednesday, 2 July.
