Proposal: New police programme in Uppsala

In a strategic move to meet the government's goal of increasing the number of police officers, the Swedish Police Authority has conducted a thorough examination of how to expand training capacity and has formally proposed that Uppsala University be commissioned to establish a new police education program. This recommendation, detailed in a recently submitted report, identifies a critical need for more training places in central Sweden, particularly to support a significant planned expansion of the police force in the Stockholm region. The authority highlights that while police training is currently offered at five institutions across the country-Malmö University, Linnaeus University, the University of Borås, Södertörn University, and Umeå University-a strategic geographic expansion is essential for efficient national growth.

Uppsala University was selected as the ideal candidate for this initiative due to its exceptional academic reputation, its status in a popular student city, and, most importantly, its extensive existing academic breadth and depth in fields directly relevant to modern policing. As explained by Joakim Palme, Vice-Rector for Humanities and Social Sciences, the university already possesses a strong foundation in the core subjects of a police program, including sociology, law, behavioural science, and emergency medicine. Furthermore, it offers a wealth of supplementary expertise that is highly valuable to police work, such as forensic science, criminalistics, and a broad range of humanities and social science disciplines, all of which are delivered at a high standard. This existing infrastructure positions the university to rapidly develop and deliver a high-quality, comprehensive education program.

The proposed program is on an ambitious timeline, with a potential start date as early as the spring semester of 2027. Magnus Ödman, Deputy Head of the Office for Humanities and Social Sciences, noted that this swift schedule means preparation time is short, underscoring the urgency of the upcoming government decision, which is expected in the early autumn. National Police Commissioner Petra Lundh endorsed the choice, stating that Uppsala University’s strong reputation and attractive location provide excellent prospects for establishing a successful program that will not only be academically robust but also strategically positioned to supply well-trained officers to the Stockholm region, where a large portion of the national police growth is planned. This initiative represents a significant step towards strengthening Sweden's law enforcement capabilities through a partnership between higher education and national security strategy.
