Jysk Accelerates Belgian Expansion with Leen Bakker Store Acquisition

The Danish home furnishings retailer Jysk is significantly accelerating its growth in Belgium, announcing a major expansion that will add 16 new stores to its network. This strategic move involves taking over nine locations from the struggling Dutch chain Leen Bakker and opening seven additional stores in former Shopping Cora sites.

Since entering the Belgian market in 2017, Jysk has rapidly grown to 70 locations. This new acquisition is a key step toward its ambitious long-term goal of operating 125 stores across the country. The deal also provides a partial rescue for Leen Bakker, which has been under court protection from creditors and seeking buyers for its 44 Belgian outlets.

The nine acquired Leen Bakker stores are located in Bruges, Dendermonde, Huy, Kuurne, Liège, Marche-en-Famenne, and Zottegem, plus two other undisclosed locations. Jysk plans to reopen the first of these converted stores in early 2026.

In a positive development for the local workforce, Jysk has committed to retaining at least 50% of the current Leen Bakker employees from the acquired stores. Meanwhile, the court-appointed administrators for Leen Bakker continue to search for buyers for the remaining 35 stores, with a final decision on their fate expected by December 7th. This expansion solidifies Jysk's growing footprint in the Belgian retail landscape while offering a lifeline to a segment of a competitor's operations.
