New lookout tower in Groenendaal forest in Heemstede: 'A piece of history back'

Construction of the new Belvedere, a lookout tower located on the same site as the original tower from 1839, will begin in January 2026 in the Groenendaal forest in Heemstede. The design is open and light, with references to nature and the forest's history.

The foundation is laid in January. Construction then pauses during the breeding season. Work resumes in August, and the tower is erected. Many components are prefabricated in a workshop, shortening construction time in the forest and reducing transport.

Eye-catcher
According to Alderwoman for Spatial Planning Eveline Stam, this will give the area a new eye-catching feature. "The Belvedere will give new meaning to a historic spot in the Groenendaal Forest, which is close to many of our hearts. We are building with a focus on greenery and the climate, and the tower brings a piece of history back to life in a contemporary design. Thanks to the donor and stakeholders who made this possible."

1839
The original Belvedere was built in 1839 and served as a lookout point in the Groenendaal forest until 1964. In 2018, the municipality received a donation of €500,000 to build a new tower.
