Minors arrested over false bomb threats at schools, asylum center in Groningen, Drenthe

Dutch police arrested two minors in connection with a series of false bomb threats that targeted five schools and a Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) accommodation across the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe earlier in the day. Authorities have indicated that further arrests in the case remain a distinct possibility as the investigation continues.

The threats were delivered by telephone within a concentrated one-hour timeframe, sparking initial alarm at three schools in Hoogezand, one school in the city of Groningen, another in Emmen, and an asylum center located in Eelde. In response to the potential danger, the affected schools in Hoogezand and Emmen implemented temporary evacuations as a precautionary measure. Following thorough searches of the premises by police, which confirmed the threats to be fraudulent, students and staff were permitted to return to their classrooms and resume normal activities.

Given the identical nature of all six threatening communications, law enforcement officials made a calculated decision not to evacuate the remaining locations in Groningen city and Eelde. This judgment call, based on the established pattern and the assessment of credibility, was aimed at minimizing unnecessary disruption while maintaining safety through increased police presence and scrutiny.

The two apprehended minors are currently in police custody for questioning. Authorities have declined to publicly release the identities of the suspects due to their age and the ongoing nature of the investigation. “The suspects are being interrogated, and we are not ruling out further arrests,” a police spokesperson confirmed, underscoring the active pursuit of all individuals potentially involved in orchestrating the coordinated scare. The incident has highlighted the serious consequences of such hoaxes, which consume significant police resources, disrupt educational and community services, and generate widespread anxiety.
