Bekaert halts electrolyser part production in Belgium on weak demand

Belgium-based technology group NV Bekaert SA (EBR:BEKB) has decided to temporarily stop production of green hydrogen electrolyser components at its Bekintex factory in Wetteren, citing slower-than-expected market growth.

“In the context of delays in the development of the green hydrogen market, with a low market demand in the short term and an upturn expected later than previously foreseen, Bekaert must adjust its activities in green hydrogen to the economic reality,” the company said.

The move is expected to affect 24 jobs at the site, which makes porous transport layers (PTL) for electrolysis technologies.

Bekaert plans to keep the facility and machinery in Wetteren to enable a potential future restart of operations when the market conditions improve, highlighting that green hydrogen remains part of its growth strategy.

As for the recently opened Innovation Hub for Hydrogen in Deerlijk, the company said that it will continue to operate and develop next-generation components for green hydrogen.

Bekaert has four production sites in Belgium. The Bekaert facility manufactures various high-tech products, including solutions for antistatic and heat-resistant textiles, and employs about 90 people in total.
