Wolfkens back from the Tour of Belgium

To celebrate its 45th anniversary, the club organized the Tour of Belgium. Twenty-one members of the Wolfkens embarked on this ambitious five-day event.

The journey began on Wednesday, May 25th, with a departure from the church in Pamel at 9:00 a.m., setting course for Ostend. The riders faced a persistent headwind and navigated several challenging cobblestone sections along the route. Thursday presented the longest leg of the tour: a demanding ride of over 170 km. The route passed the historic Het Steen in Antwerp, concluding with a welcome tailwind push into Hoogstraten.

The province of Limburg awaited the group on Friday. They cycled towards Maaseik, crossed the Maas bridge, and then turned south to continue their journey into Sittard in the Netherlands. Saturday, May 28th, was designated the queen stage. This punishing day featured the Cauberg in the Netherlands after just 17 km, the infamous Mur de Huy at the 100 km mark, and the final climb up the Citadel in Namur.

Sunday morning in Namur dawned cold under a foreboding sky. The day started with yet another climb to exit the city, and the first heavy downpour caught the riders around Villers-la-Ville. A welcome respite came in Virginal, where cake was served at the supply station, though another heavy shower followed soon after. Despite the weather, the Wolfkens persevered, arriving back in Pamel around 2 p.m. to conclude their remarkable cycling week with a well-earned glass of beer.
