Emergency Care to Improve as Gävle Hospital Undergoes Major Reconstruction
Region Gävleborg is investing over one billion kronor in a new emergency department and a consolidated maternity care unit at Gävle Hospital, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for May next year.
"Newborns and their families will get a better start in life, and patients in need of emergency care will receive it faster," writes Regional Councilor Henrik Olofsson (SJPG) in a press release.
However, it will be several years before the plans become reality. Construction is set to begin in May 2026, and the project is expected to take five years to complete.
According to Region Gävleborg, neonatal intensive care, childbirth, and premature baby care will be brought together in one location, housed in more modern, purpose-built premises. Parents and children will be able to stay together throughout the care period, and the new layout will promote better coordination between the departments.
One of the Region's Largest Investments
The emergency department, which has been in operation since 1986, will be expanded to include more emergency rooms, treatment and examination rooms, and trauma bays.
The pediatric emergency department already has a separate reception area. The new building will also feature an infection unit with its own entrance to improve infection control. Other upgrades include a new ambulance intake with additional drop-off points, the purchase of new medical equipment, and a modern ventilation system.

The renovation is one of the largest investments the region has ever made. The building permit has already been secured, and the next step is to appoint a construction contractor.
