New 3D Map of the Universe Suggests Einstein May Have Been Wrong

A newly released 3D map of the universe featuring more than 47 million galaxies is the most detailed ever created-and it could challenge some of Albert Einstein's most fundamental theories.

 
 
"His theory has been tested extremely well, but maybe something else happens when we look at the entire cosmos," says researcher Klaus Honscheid, who has been involved in the project.
 
The map is based on observations from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), mounted on the Mayall Telescope at Kitt Peak in Arizona. Equipped with about 5,000 fiber-optic cables, DESI can capture light from thousands of galaxies at once. Rather than producing a flat image, the instrument generates a three-dimensional map showing how galaxies are distributed across space.
 
Each point on the map represents a galaxy, and together they form what scientists call the cosmic web—a structure that reflects how tiny irregularities in the universe just after the Big Bang grew into the galaxies and stars we see today.
 
"There is a pattern, a large-scale structure in the universe," says Honscheid.
 
The research could prove crucial to understanding dark energy, the mysterious force thought to drive the accelerating expansion of the universe and believed to make up a large portion of its total content.
 
Because light from many of the observed galaxies has traveled for billions of years, researchers can compare how galaxies were distributed at different cosmic epochs. Through this analysis, they have found indications that dark energy may not be constant.
 
"Our measurements indicate that dark energy changes over time," Honscheid explains. "If true, this has major consequences for fundamental physics and means that Einstein's cosmological constant is no longer sufficient to describe the universe."
