Elfsborg Held by Lowly Halmstad as GAIS Extend Unbeaten Run
Elfsborg failed to put real pressure on leaders Sirius at the top of Allsvenskan after being held to a 1–1 draw by winless Halmstad, while mid-table GAIS and Degerfors also played out a 1–1 stalemate.
Halmstad ended their three-match losing streak, though a late equalizer from Elfsborg denied them their first win of the campaign. As a result, the visitors could only close the gap to Sirius to four points.
Midway through the first half, the home side took the lead. Hussein Carneil brought down a long crossfield ball from Andreas Boman, and his curling cross evaded everyone in the penalty area before finding its way into the back of the net.
That remained the score until ten minutes from time. Momoh Camara skipped away from his marker on the byline and squared the ball across for Arber Zeneli, who struck first-time to ensure a share of the spoils.
Despite the late heartbreak, Halmstad moved off the bottom of the table for the time being, climbing above Goteborg on goal difference. Elfsborg, meanwhile, rose back above Hammarby into second place.
Given their identical records coming into the match, the 1–1 draw between GAIS and Degerfors was perhaps less surprising. The two sides now sit on nine points in eighth and ninth place respectively. GAIS extended their unbeaten run to five matches, while Degerfors bounced back from a heavy defeat last time out.
The home side went ahead just 13 minutes in when a drilled cross from Matteo de Brienne was headed home by William Milovanovic.
But with only eight minutes remaining, Degerfors hit back. A measured attack ended with Elias Barsoum latching onto a through ball and pulling it across goal for Erik Lindell to bundle in.
